We got an invite from the American Embassy school in New Delhi to play in the South Asian International School Association (SAISA) where we would play against international schools in India and Pakistan. We did not win but we had the opportunity to visit the Taj Mahal.

Climbing Sri Pada

Also known at Adam’s Peak to the Christians, Sri Pada, is Sri Lanka’s most holiest mountains. It is said that Buddha has left his footprint there. My dad, sister, and friend Walter Pflanz started the climb at 2am to reach the top at 6am for sunrise. Here we are on the top next to Buddha’s footprint.

Road to Kandy

A new friend

As my family and I make our first road trip to Kandy, I ask my dad to stop the car so I can make a new friend.

Arriving in Sri Lanka

On August 26, 1988, an American family touched down on Sri Lanka.

The two daughters were age 11 and 14 and their father had accepted a job

at USAID.  Their mother was an English teacher. As their driver drove them

to their new home located on 38 Guildford Crescent, ox carts drove along

the side of them and chickens ran loose.  Kids frolicked  around barefoot

while wearing torn clothing.  They still managed to stop and wave to the new

visitors. The roads are not paved like they are in America.  In fact they were

barely paved at all.  The adventure in a civil war in paradise was about to begin.
